Frequently asked questions
Straightforward answers, whether you're looking for a shop or thinking about joining as a retailer.
For parents and gift givers
What does 'Good Play Guide accredited' actually mean?
It means a toy has been assessed by child development experts and tried out by real families before it earns the badge. We look at whether it holds a child's attention, whether it's built to last, and whether it genuinely supports how children learn through play, not just whether it's safe or popular. See the full accreditation process at goodplayguide.com.
How are toys tested?
Toys go through expert review alongside home trials with real families. If children lose interest quickly, or a toy doesn't hold up to the way children actually play with it, it doesn't earn accreditation. You can read the full process at how we test our toys on goodplayguide.com.
How do I find a shop that stocks accredited toys?
Use the find a retailer page and search by postcode, town, or your current location. You can filter by category and age range, and switch between a list view and a map view.
What if there isn't an accredited shop near me yet?
New shops join every month. If nothing shows up close by, the directory will still show you the nearest shops we do have, and you can leave your email so we can let local shops know families are searching in your area.
How do I know if a toy is right for my child's age?
Every accredited product is tagged with a recommended age range, based on the expert assessment and family trials. Use this as a helpful guide alongside what you know about your own child.
For retailers
How does a shop join the programme?
Visit the for retailers page and start your application from the join page. It's a short, three step self-certification form that takes about ten minutes.
Is it free to join?
Yes. The Registered tier is free and includes a directory listing, a digital badge, and access to the accredited product list. Display Partner and Flagship tiers add printed branded assets, supplied at cost through our print partner.
How long does approval take?
Applications are usually reviewed within three working days. Once approved, your shop goes live in the find a retailer directory.
How do I update or remove my shop's listing?
Email hello@goodplayguide.com with your shop name and the changes you need. We can update your details or de-list your shop from the public directory at any time.
Can I see which accredited products to stock?
Yes. The product tool lets you search the full accredited list, filter by brand, age or category, mark what you already carry, and export a CSV to use as a buying guide.
